The ruling Cambodian People's Party has rejected the the Sam Rainsy Party's (SRP) proposal for the creation a newly-independent border commission to replaced the government-appointed Cambodian Border Committee, reports Deum Ampil.
The SRP had on Sunday proposed for a creation of an independent border commission in light of accusations that the government-appointed border commission has not fulfilled its duty in the defence of Cambodian territorial integrity in the face of alleged increased border encroachments by Vietnam and Thailand.
Mr. Cheam Yiep (pictured), a senior MP from the ruling CPP, said border work is a technical issue that requires technical expertise, not a political issue. "So, the border issues should left to the technical experts, especially the government, to handle it", he said.
However, civil society and many NGOs supported the creation of an independent border commission. Mr. Kul Panha, chairman of Committee for Free and Fair Election (COMFREL), has expressed supports for the proposal, saying that border issue is not solely the technical problems, but political problems as well that need a political redress. "There should be political debates to seek a united common policy (and opinions) from political parties and relevant people", he said.
Mrs. Chea Vannath, an independent analyst, had also expressed her supports for the creation of an independednt border commission. "The newly-created border commission should have the participation of civil society and the media to the make the border works more transparent", she said.

Only Independent border commission can ensure that Cambodian borders are properly demarcated and defended. The govt-appointed commission only follow the political line of the ruling CPP which never opposed any Vietnam's encroachments.
Mr. hun xen needs to replace this idiot because he makes the cpp looks bad. He sounds like the person mr. hun xen referred as the person that could not read the MAP.
Ask yourself these questions: Do you serve your party "CPP" or you serve your country ? Do you serve Hun Sen or your motherland ?. Please wake up before it too late.
