The illegal gold mining activities carried out by an army unit protecting the borders have nearly destroyed a mountain in Kampot province, reports Deum Ampil.

The report said that Border Defence Unit 302 had illegally conducted mining activities by digging, bulldozing and transporting earth containing gold minerals out of Phom Lork (Mount Lork), a mountain located in West Reussey Srok village, Kampong Trolach district of Kampot province for some time. When asked whether their activities are illegal or not, peole surpervising the areas produced permit that have been signed by Mining and Energy Minister Suy Sem that allowed the areas to be developed in order to construct the headquarter for Border Defence Unit 302.

However, the permit signed by Minister Suy Sem only allow the developments of two hectares of lands in the areas and did not give permission for the mining of the mountain.

According to its sources, Deum Ampil claimed that the mining had been conducted illegally with the connivance of the Kampot provincial authority.

Mr. Uy Sinath, Governor of Kampong Trolach, told Deum Ampil by telephone that he had asked the Border Defence Unit 302 to stop mining the mountain, but he said that the Kampot provincial mining authority had given the green light for them to continue mining.

However, Mr. Som Vichet, Director of Department of Mining in Kampot, said he was not aware of the mining activities at Phnom Lork because he had just returned from a visit to China. He refused to comment further by saying that "I'm busy in a meeting" and then immediately switched off his phone in the middle of the conversation.
