The leadership of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) has vowed to respect and unflinchingly defend the Cambodian monarchy, reports Radio France Internationale.

This renewed assurance came at a time when the three top leaders of the CPP, namely Prime Minister Hun Sen, Senate President Cgea Sim and National Assembly President Heng Samrin, have been conferred honours and promoted to 5-star generals in a royal decree signed by King Norodom Sihamoni recently.

In separate letters to King-Father Sihanouk, who is currently staying for medical treatments in Beijing, the three leaders vowed to defend the monarchy and be always loyal to the king. Mr. Chea Sim said he will serve the monarchy with all his physical and mental energy. Mr. Hun Sen vowed to unflinchingly protect the king and the monarchy and will always follw the footsteps and heroism of King-Father Sihanouk.

The latest overwhelming praises from the CPP leadership came after the Father-King sent them a congratulation letter on the occasion of them receiving the honours and promotions from the current king. The King-Father lauded the three leaders with praises for their patriotism and achievements in all fields in leading Cambodia to developments.

However, Mr. Sam Rainsy, leader of the main opposition party who is currently under an arrest warrant, has accused the CPP of undermining the democratisation process of Cambodia and has put demoncracy in Cambodia in dangers.
