Prime Minister Hun Sen (pictured) has strongly warned those who distributed leaflets condemning the 7th January Day by saying that he knew who was behind it, reports Radio Free Asia.
Mr. Hun Sen gave this warning during a groundbreaking ceremony of a road construction site in Kean Svay district of Kandal province on the morning of 5th.
Vietnam invaded Cambodia on 7th January, 1979. The ruling Cambodian People's Party celebrates this day as a liberation day, while former members of the anti-Vietnamese resistance and the opposition parties consider it an invasion day.
A few days before the 31th anniversary of the 7th January Day, thousands of leaflets condemning the day as the beginning of the Vietnamese occupation of Cambodia. Mr. Hun Sen said that he knew the instigator behind the leaflets and that he/she will be arrested soon. "The leaflets that you printed and distributed in Thailand have reached Phnom Penh. I ( using the the derogatory term 'Anh') knew the identity of the one who is behind the leaflets that insult the 7th January Day. Yesterday Anh (I) have seen the leaflets that insult Ah ( the derogatory term meaning 'you') Hun Sen and those leaflets were printed in Thailand and sent in to distribute inside Cambodia. I told you, it (your action) has been revealed. And you always think that you can escape to hide in Bangkok (in Thailand). So you can hide in there because the ones who distributed the leaflets before was hiding in there and the ones distributed the leaflets later are also hiding in there and the ones who plan to distribute the leaflets have now been identified. I have already read those leaflets, so where are they now? Genlemen! Peace, national reconciliation and independence are very important for any country. No one country can develop while the turmoil is going on. Cambodia has just achieved unification ('unity' when Khmer Rouge defected in 1998) for only 11 years, even though we have liberated the country for 31 years already, but the war hasn't ended yet. Now, we have ended the war through our win-win policy", Mr. Hun Sen said.
Every year before the celebration of the anniversary of the Vietnamese intervention in Cambodia, there are always anti-7th January Day leaflets being distributed around the country.
