Cambodia-Vietnam to complete border demarcations this year

Cambodia and Vietnam plan to complete border demarcations by the end of 2010, Radio Fee Asia quoted the BBC as reporting.

Th BBC broadcast on Monday 4th January that during a meeting of the Cambodian Border Commission on 30th December 2009. Mr. Var Kimhong, the Commission's chairman, said that Cambodia and Vietnam had agreed to plant 375 border pillars along their 1270-kilometre long borders. The BBC quoted Mr. Var Kimhong (pictured) as saying that 111 border pillars had been planted and another 49 have been built and ready to be planted. The rest of the border pillars will be planted in 2010, reports the BBC.

On the Khmer-Thai borders, Mr. Var Kimhong said that Cambodia and Thailand had already inspected the 73 border originally pillars planted under the Franco-Siamese Agreements in 1908, 1919 and 1920. Currently, 48 of the 73 border pillars originally planted had been found. Among the 48 pillars found, 33 had been agreed and 15 are still in dispute.

Mr. Var Kimhong said, if agreed by the Thai side, the technical teams from both countries will continue to search for the missing 25 border pillars in 2010.
