Mr. Phay Siphan (pictured), the spokesman for the Cambodian Council of Ministers, on 12th January repudiated Thai claims made on 9th January that Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak Pagoda and the lands surrounding Preah Vihear temple belong to Thailand, reports Deum Ampil.
Prime Minister Hun Sen had also strongly warned Thailand over the claims in a public speech during a graduation ceremony on 12th January.
In a statement released to the media, the Council of Ministers reminded the Thai public and Thai government as well international community that the verdict of the International Court of Justice on 15th June 1962 stressed unequivocally that Preah Vihear temple and the surrounding areas are wholly situated within the territory of Cambodia. The statement also stressed that the court verdict was based on the annex of the 1904 Convention signed between the two countries on 13th February 1904 which indicated clearly about the Khmer-Thai borderlines and the 1907 Treaty signed between the two countries on 23rd June 1907 regarding the border dilimitation between the two countries.
At the end of the statement, the Cambodian Council of Ministers expressed regrets the Thai claims because they are aimed at stoking nationalistic fervour and ultra-nationalistic extremist views for its own interests.
The statement re-affirmed that Cambodia did not invade the territories of any country. On the contrary, it was Thailand who invaded Cambodian territories when it sent troops to occupy the areas surrouding Preah Vihear temple on 15th July 2008, one week after Unesco decided to inscribe Preah Vihear temple as a world heritage site.
