Thousands of Cambodian people attended a solemn ceremony held at the office of the Cambodian Revolutionary Party (CPP) on January 7 to mark the 31st anniversary of toppling the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime.
Among the participants were the President of the CPP Chea Sim, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian National Assembly Heng Samrin and representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations.
Chea Sim delivered a speech highlighting the political and socio-economic achievements made by the Cambodian people over the past 31 years ago.
He said the CPP supports the trial proceedings undertaken by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) for the Prosecution of Crimes Committed during the Period of Democratic Kampuchea but protests against any scheme to exploit the ECCC for cynical purposes that affect peace, national reconciliation and development in the country.
