MPs from SRP to visit border areas

By Khmerization

A group of more than 20 MPs from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party planned to visit the border demarcation site where party president Sam Rainsy led 100 villagers to uproot six border poles on 25th October, reports Radio France Internationale.

Mr. Son Chhay (pictured), leader of the group, said the MPs planned to visit the site, located on Chantrea district in Svay Rieng province, on Monday 14th December. He added that the request to visit the site had been submitted to National Assembly President Heng Samrin, but so far there is no response from Mr. Heng Samrin yet.

However, he said, as MPs, they have the duty and obligation to defend Cambodian territorial integrity and his group will visit the site regardless of whether the request was granted or not.

Mr. Cheam Yeap, MP from the ruling Cambodian People's Party, said the visit can only go ahead if permission is granted by Mr. Heng Samrin and warned that any unauthorised visit will be dealt with by the National Assembly and the laws.

Mr. Sam Rainsy, who led the villagers to uprott the border poles, have been stripped off his parliamentary immunity on 16th November and he has since fled the country to France.
