Flags have been used since the early history of civilization.People and nations use flag as an expression of their identity, superiority or victory.
The Buddhists use a five colours and six striped flag. It has five colours of the Buddha's aura, consisting of royal blue, golden, yellow, dark red, white and magenta orange. Its has six vertical strips representing five colours in the above orders in the first five strips and a composition of all the five colours in the last trip.
The blue strip is near the flag staff and the composite one constitutes the free margin. It is said that when Gotama the Buddha attained enlightenment, five colours emanated from his body- royal blue from his hair, golden yellow from his skin, red from the flesh and blood, white from the teeth and bones and orange from the palms, heels and lips. As they became blended together,a sixth composite colour was formed. And all of these six colours surrounded Buddha's person.
The five colours: blue, yellow, red, white and orange also represent the noble qualities of the Buddha - blue for confidence, yellow for holiness, red for wisdom, white for purity and orange for desirelessness. Therefore, the Buddhist flag reminds the spiritual aura of the Buddha.
The Buddhist flag, which is also called PANCHA sila flag,is a symbol of the revival of Dhamma in the modern times. The flag was dedsigned by a Board headed by Sri Sumangala and consisting of venerable Hikkaduve,William de Abrew,Don Carolis Hewavitharana,Peter de Abrew, Lansage Don Andiris Perera Dharmagunawardene,Charls A.de Silva, N.S. Fernando, William Fernando as members and Carolis Poojitha Goonawardene as the Secretary. CArolis Poojitha Goonawardene designed and produced the Buddhist flag to the board and was accepted.
Venerable M.Gunananda, a famous Buddhist Monk first hoisted the flag at Kotahena,in Sri Lanka on the occasion of Buddha Purnima on the 28 April 1885. The flag was accepted as the world Buddhist Flag at the first conference of the Wold Fellowship of Buddhists held in Sri Lanka in 1950.
