The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has spent $11 billion for developing Cambodia's Greater Mekong Sub-Region Project for the last 17 years, reports Deum Ampil.

Mr. Kim Chantha, ADB spokesman, said the majority of the Cambodia's development funds come from ADB and the rest come from ADB member countries. "Of the $11 billion for the development of Cambodia in the last 17 years, $3.8 billion are from ADB and the rest come from members of ADB such as Japan, America and France", he said.

Mr. Kim Chantha told Deum Ampil Radio that the funds were spent on road infrastructures, clean water, education, judicial reforms and hygiene.

ADB was founded in 1966 and since 1992, it was heavily involved in the reconstruction of war-ravaged Cambodia. ADB's Greater Mekong Sub-Region Project include six countries, namely Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Burma and China.

Wonderful!! Now all we need is the transparent accounts from the government and the evaluation reports from the implementing organisations and maybe we can begin to work out where all the money went and why the roads, schools etc are still shite.

P.s. 'The US ploughed US$13bn into Western Europe in less than four years - about US$100bn in today's
money.' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/uk_news/4152797.stm, BBC NEWS, 2005/01/06 17:51:56 GMT)

If we think about $11 billion, it is a lot of money for a small Cambodia. But after these money were spent, not much of change has happened in Cambodia in the 17 years comparing to $13 billion (or $100 in today) in the whole of Europe. After world war II, Europe has risen from the ashes very impressively.

What has gone wrong? Corruption and mismanagement by the Cambodian government.
