Man gets licence revoked after allegedly hitting family in Lowell, Mass.

Play vide
(NECN: Lauren Collins, Lowell, Mass.) - Nina Wilkin knows how lucky she is.

"I'm just glad my kids are alright. That's all I care about, that my kids are alright," she says outside her Lowell, Massachusetts apartment Monday, hours after the 25-year-old and rushing her two toddlers were run down, allegedly by 60-year-old Cambodian immigrant Chamreoun Theum.

Police say, at the time of the crash, he was drunk and hit the family so hard they were thrown into the air.

"I thought my son was dead. He was curled up in a ball on the street. So that's what I thought happened," says a teary eyed Wilkin.

Middlesex Assistant District Attorney Dan Harren said in court, "the four year old (sic) was ejected from the stroller, was also thrown into the air, landed on the ground, and was found unconscious when police responded."

Theum appeared in a Lowell courtroom Monday afternoon; several of his children were there for support. He showed no emotion as a judge ordered $5,000 bail and told him his license had been revoked.

"My dad is a loving and caring person," said one of his daughters outside the courthouse.

Theum's daughter-in-law, Sochann Chea, apologized. "We feel very, very bad about the victim. The only thing we can say is that we're very sorry and we hope everything is going to be ok."

Wilkin, her two year old daughter Katilyn and her three year old son Jonathan checked out of the hospital with a remarkably few bumps
and bruises. They hope Theum's punishment is much more severe than their injuries.

"This is a very serious issue," says Jonathan Dickie, the children's father. "You can't be drinking and driving, especially with little kids walking around."

Wilkin reflects, "drunk driving. A lot of people get hurt doing those types of things."

When asked if this is the wake up call Theum needs to get help, Chea says, "Hopefully this will be the wake up call, but only if he wants help."
