A group of 10 Thai soldiers have on 19th October shot and killed a Cambodian logger, who was logging on the Khmer-Thai borders, reports Khmer Express News.
Mr. Lek Sokha, Deputy Police Commissioner of Oddar Meanchey said 28 year-old Sim Bunly (DAP News named the victim as 25 year-old Sim Bun Chhim) was shot with an M79 rocket launcher at 5:30 pm at Chamkar Chek village, O'Smach commune in Samrong district of Oddar Meanchey province and died of his wounds in the hospital at 9 pm.
According to Deum Ampil, on 19th October, 4 Cambodian youth were hired by illegal timber traders to remove the logs from the Khmer-Thai border areas between border posts 13 and 14 at O'Smach.They were shot at by a group of Thai soldiers, seriously wounding Sim Bunly and his three friends, who were not hit, rescued him back to Cambodia.
Mr. Chhin Sivuthy, Chief Inspector of Oddar Meanchey, said the 4 youths were hired by illegal timber traders. "The 4 youths decided to go to the jungle because dishonest timber traders hired them to retrieve the logs from the top of the mountains in exchange for very little money", he said.
Mr. Koy Kuong, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, cannot be reached for comments. However, Gen. Chhum Socheat, spokesman for the Cambodian Defence Ministry, said the report is true. "The information is true, but there hasn't been a written report yet because onn 19th October 2009 there were our people from Chamkar Chek village in O'Smach commune of Samrong district went to cut timber in betwwen border posts 13 and 14 and met the Thai border troops and they shot at them. (The wounded) was sent to the hospital and he died at the hospital", Gen. Chhum Socheat said.
On 11 September 2009, a group of 10 Thai soldiers from Unit 2608 shot at a group of 23 Cambodian loggers working between border posts 12 and 13, seriously wounding two youths, Mao Kloeng who had escaped and Yon Rith was allegedly burned alive by those Thai troops after they arrested him.
