Cambodia strengthens security for the visit of South Korean president

The Cambodian authority are strengthening security around Phnom Penh in anticipation of the arrival of South Korean President and his delegation on Thursday 22rd October for a 2-day official visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Hun Sen, reports Deum Ampil.

Gen. Khieu Sopheak, spokesman for the Interior Ministry and Gen. Sao Sokha, chief of National Military Police, have said that all aspects of President Lee's security have been in place.

President Lee Myung-bak will lead a large delegation to Cambodia. But a Cambodian Foreign Ministry officials cannot confirm how many South Korean officials are included in President Lee's delegation. However, he can confirm that at least 60 South Korean journalists had accompanied the President's trip to Cambodia.

The same official said that during the visit, 2 important agreements, extradition Treaty and Financial Loans Agreement, will be signed between Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong and South Korean Foreign Minister Yu Myung-van.

On top of these, there other 5 documents that will be signed between the two countries, and that is agremeents on Trades and Industry Co-Operations, Co-Operations on Joint Media Programming, Memorandum of Understanding on Co-Operations on Mineral Sectors, Memorandum of Understanding on Joint Mineral Explorations and Memorandum of Understanding on Investments, Reforestation and Climate Change.

Trades and tourism between Cambodia and South Korea have increased dramatically in the last few years. In 2008, two-way trades amounted to $308.761 million, with South Korea exporting $294.38 million worth of goods to Cambodia, while Cambodia exported $14.378 million worth of goods to South Korea. 266,370 South Koreans visited Cambodia in 2008, making South Korea the number one source of tourism to Cambodia.

South Korean businesses had invested $1.210 billion in Cambodia and the South Korean government had provided $17.623 million financial aid, $60 million in loans for 2008-2009, $127 million in loans for 5 projects for 2008-2011.

On top of this, the Cambodian government had signed $380 million loan from South Korea to pay for additional 5 projects.
