The opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) has said that it supports the Cambodian government's ideas of bringing the Preah Vihear issue to the international forums, reports everyday.com.

Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong said on Wednesday that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen will raise border issues with Thailand at area near the 11th century Khmer Preah Vihear temple at the forthcoming ASEAN summit.

Mr. Yim Sovan (pictured), an SRP MP and spokesman, said the SRP not only supports the ideas of bring the Khmer-Thai Preah Vihear dispute to the Asean forum, but beyond. The SRP has called for the dispute to be mediated by the UN Security Council of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands.

Mr. Yim Sovan said his party has no confidence in the Khmer-Thai bilateral talks as they have produced no results for the last one year. "We do not have any confidence that the Khmer-Thai border disputes can be resolved through bilateral talks. We need the intervention from the UN Security Council in order to make Thailand respects international treaties and the verdict of International Court of Justice which adjudicated that Preah Vihear temple and the surrounding areas belong to Cambodia", Mr. Yim Sovan told Phnom Penh Post recently.

By bringing the border disputes with Thailand to international stage, Cambodia has more leverage in dealing with the Thais. Bilateral talks have produced no results for the last 15 months, therefore Cambodia should stop playing this Thai game.

The internationalization of the Preah Vihear issue through Asean, UN and international court is the best way to resolve this issue satisfactorily and peacefully.
