Lawyer: No evidence to link Khieu Samphan to Khmer Rouge crimes

By Khmerization

Khieu Samphan's co-defence lawyer claimed that there is no evidence that has linked his client to the crimes committed during the Khmer Rouge regime, reports everyday.com.

Speaking on "Hello VOA" Khmer program on Monday, Mr. Sa Savan, Khieu Samphan's Khmer lawyer, said up until now there is no documents that can link his client to any crimes which were responsible for nearly 2 million Cambodian lives from 1975-1079. "Up until today, this hour, there is not any piece of evidence. Now, they are continuing to search for the evidence and I am following their investigation very closely. If they will find anything, I am sure they will tell me about it. Like what I have said, so far there is no clear evidence (against my client)", he said.

Mr. Sa Savan said he hoped Mr. Khieu Samphan (pictured) will be exonerated of all charges because he is an honest and clean person.

Investigating Judge You Bun Leng said this is just an opinion of Mr. Khieu Samphan's lawyer. He added that if there is no evidence to link Mr. Khieu Samphan to the Khmer Rouge crimes, all charges against him will be dropped, but it is too early to tell. "We may drop all charges (against Khieu Samphan), but right now we cannot assume anything", he said.

Mr. Khieu Samphan served as the nominal Head of State of the Khmer Rouge Regime from 1976-1979. Mr. Khieu Samphan always protested his innocence because he said the position of the Head of State during the Khmer Rouge regime was just a powerless figurehead position.

While no-one can dispute Mr. Khieu Samphan intellectual credentials, it seems odd that someone with his brains would have led the KR as president and later succeeded Pol Pot as leader of the KR. Did he have no idea what the war had done to his country?

Are we to believe that for 15 years after the ouster of the KR from PP, this man had no idea that the organisation he led had murdered hundreds of thousands // millions of his countrymen?

Should not this man be on trial for misusing his intellect to lead his country to complete ruin? Crimes against Cambodia certainly.

Mr. Khieu Samphan was influenced by the French communists when he studied in France in the late 1950s. At that time communism and socialism was a new idea and, to Khieu Samphan, it seem perfectly suited to the Cambodian situation. However, no one understand why the Khmer Rouge launched an agrarian revolution, by sending all population to farms, when the Khmer Rouge leaders knew perfectly well that the 1966 Chinese Revolution was a disaster.

In hindsight, he seem an idiot, but everyone know that he is the lesser evil among all the KR leaders, including Hun Sen.
