The Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission (TLHRC) of the US Congress announced last week that it will invite MP Mu Sochua and Dr. Pung Chiv Kek of Licadho, and Mr. Moeun Tola of Community Lecal Education Center (CLEC) to testify on the human right conditions in Cambodia. The testimony is expected to take place on 10th September 2009.

The U.S Congress is concerned over a recent surge in legal actions against opposition MPs and government critics brought on by the government as well as land evictions.

The Congressional hearing will focus on the 2001 land laws and human rights issues in Cambodia and the many recent lawsuits brought up by the government against its critics. The case of Mr. Hun Sen versus Mu Sochua is expected to feature prominently in the hearing. The hearing will also raise the issue of political pressures imposed on journalists and opposition activists, and the current labor laws which have been selectively applied.

The U.S Congress is also concerned that the Cambodian government failed to properly put into application the 2001 land laws.
