Opposition party suspicious about troop withdrawals

Cambodian opposition party is very suspicious of Cambodia's unilateral troop withdrawals where there is no troop withdrawals from the Thai side.

Mr. Son Chhay (pictured), MP from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), said he wanted to know why Cambodia unilaterally decided to withdrawal troops from the disputed borders while on the Thai still maintain all their troops in the areas. "I wanted to know why we decided to withdraw troops because according to news reports the Thai side will maintain the status quo. We don't understand the government's strategy in regard to the border issues. For the government to make such a decision (to withdraw), is it because the Thai side had made promises that they will stop invading? However, I believe that our troop withdrawals will not lead to the respect of our territorial integrity by Thailand."

Son Chhay said border problems with Thailand cannot be resolved through military means or bilateral negotiations. The issues can only be resolved with the involvements of the international community and Asean (Association of South East Asian Nations) has to urge Thailand to respect the territorial integrity of its member countries and also respect the Paris Peace Accords where Thailand was also a signatory.

I think Hun Sen has a hidden agenda behind these troop withdrawals. May be there was a secret talk with Thailand and Thailand made some promises. But Hun Sen will be a fool if he believes Thailand's promises considering that nearly 10 times of talks resulted in nothing regarding border issues.
