Thai troops have reportedly started to take off barbed wire fences and concrete posts that they have planted to build concrete walls along the borders near Preah Vihear temple.
Gen. Srey Doek, commander of the Preah Vihear areas, told Deum Ampil by phone on the afternoon of 7th August that Thai troops had commenced taking off the barbed wire fences and concrete posts they installed earlier. He said: "They have started to dismantle those reinforced concrete posts already, but they have not finished dismantling them yet."
A few days ago Cambodian soldiers told the media that Thai troops had begun constructing concrete walls along the 7-kilometres disputed borders from Chak Chreng area to Preah Vihear temple.
The year-long dispute had resulted in two armed clashes in late 2008 and early 2009 that killed at least 7 soldiers on both sides.
Since the clashes, there are reports of numerous Thai border violations and intimidation with the mobilisations of troops, tanks and heavy weaponry to the disputed areas as well as encroaching further into Khmer territories.
Both Cambodia and Thailand had agreed to start border demarcation works a few months ago but the Thai had asked several times for a delay due to its internal political crisis.
Mr. Var Kimhong, senior Cambodian border negotiator, was not amused with the Thai excuses when asked when the demarcation works will commence. He said: "With the Thai promises I cannot say when. We have agreed to start work since April, but now it is July and August already and we don't even know when the work will start."
