Chea Mony, current union leader and younger brother of the slain ex-union leader Chea Vichea, said he is not afraid to face the full force of the laws and is ready to go to prison after the government signalled that it will file a lawsuit against him for disinformation.

The government said that it will lodge a lawsuit against Chea Mony on charges of disinformation when he recently testified in court that he believe that the government was behind his brother's murder.

Chea Vichea was gunned down in broad daylight in 2003 and Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun were arrested for his murder, but critics and human rights groups insisted that the two were innocent and have since campaigned for their release and had also asked the government to bring the real killers to justice.

During the testimony on 17th August, Chea Mony had accused the government and a number of police, including convicted ex-commissioner of Phnom Penh Police Heng Pov, of complicity in the murder of his brother. The government said it is preparing documents to sue Chea Mony for disinformation, a charge that warrant a jail term. But Chea Mony recently told the Phnom Penh Post that he maintained his remarks and is prepared to go to jail.

He he told the Phnom Penh Post: "I maintain my stance from the beginning and acknowledge that [Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun] were fake killers, and I urge the court to find the real killers," he said at the time. "I am ready to take responsibility and dare to be imprisoned for my conclusion about my brother's case, which is that the government prepared a plan to kill my brother."

Gen. Khieu Sopheak, spokesman for the Interior Ministry, said the government has not lodged a lawsuit against Chea Mony yet, but said it reserves the rights to sue him.

You are right. This disinformation law exists only for the ruling party to persecute their critics. It would be good if it is repealed, but the ruling CPP will not repeal it because it will not have any tool to suppress its critics any more, if it is repealed.
