A number of MPs from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) have been denied access to visit Mr. Hang Chakra (pictured) who was arrested a few weeks ago and is now serving a 12-month sentence for publishing articles criticising official corruption within Deputy PM Sok An's circle.
Mrs. Ke Sovannaroth, Secretary-General of the SRP, said a group of MPs from her party got a verbal permission from the judge to visit Mr. Hang Chakra, but they were denied entry to visit the jailed editor by prison wardens. She said : "We have written a letter to the presiding judge and he gave us a verbal permission, not a written permission, that we can visit Mr. Hang Chakra. But this morning, the prison officials told us that because we did not have a written permission they are afraid to let us visit him. They said we had to go back and get a written permission."
Mr. Mong Kim Heng, director of Preysor Prison, said he has not received the written permission yet, so he can't let them in. He said: "all prison visits must go through the Ministry of Interior."
Mr. Hang Chakra, editor-in-chief of Khmer Machas Srok newspaper, received a one-year jail term after publishing a series of articles uncovering official corruption within Deputy PM Sok An's circle.
