Mr. Mayarith, a high profile Radio Free Asia's Khmer Service based in Washington DC, has unexpectedly tendered his resignation, report Deum Ampil.
Deum Ampil quoted RFA's sources as saying on the afternoon of Friday 3rd July that Mr. Mayarith has resigned from RFA unexpectedly, but they did not provide any reasons for his resignation.
Mr. Mayarith is considered by many Cambodians as a journalist of high professional standards. His reports received high praises from the Cambodian population.
Mr. Mayarith worked as reporter for Agence France Presse and as a stringer for RFA in the 1990s. After 1997, Mr. Mayarith was the first native Cambodian from Cambodia selected to work at RFA's Washington office until his resignation.
(Some reports say that during the 1997 coup d'etat, Mr. Mayarith reported critically against Mr. Hun Sen's action. As a result, he feared for his life and has to be given an asylum or given a new assignment in the United States to escape death threats.)
