Mr. Son Chhay, MP from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), has asked the government to reveal the revenue reports generated by petroleum exploration concessions awarded to foreign companies since 2004, reports everyday.com.
The SRP-affiliated Moneaksekar newspaper quoted Mr. Son Chhay as not very confident about the transparency of the revenue collections. He said: "We do not trust the government. In the past it had never prepared any proper reports about the revenue from the oil and gas explorations. A lot of revenues from our natural resources had been missing such as from forestry (illegal logging), gold, minerals and petroleum explorations in our seabeds."
International financial institutions have in the past expressed concerns that the petroleum finds could make Cambodia become an "oil curse" like Nigeria where increased oil productions had made the country become poorer rather than richer.
In response to the criticism, PM Hun Sen said publicly that: "Cambodia is not as silly as to allow Cambodia to become like Nigeria. We have budgeted our oil revenue very well and we won't follow the footpath of Nigeria."
