Mr. Rong Chhun, president of the Cambodian Independent Teachers Association, had on 10th June sent a letter to the Phnom Penh City Hall informing it of his association's to hold a peaceful protest against the Thai prime Minister's visit, reports Khmer Sthapana.
The Thai Prime Minister, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, is scheduled to arrive in Cambodia on Friday the 12th of June for a two day visit to Cambodia.
Mr. Rong Chhun said even if the authority did not give permission, his group will still go ahead with the plan because he said the the freedom of expression was inscribed in the constitution which did not stipulate that protest organisers need to seek permission from the authority, but just informing them of their intentions.
Mr. Rong Chhun said his protest was to demand that Thai troops stop violating Cambodian sovereignty and territorial integrity. He said his group will also demand that Thailand compensate for the damages to a market and villagers' homes caused by Thai shells during the armed clashes on 3rd April, 2009.
Mr. Nuon Sameth, director of the Office of Phnom Penh City Hall, did not answer Khmer Sthapana's repeated telephone calls. However, Mr. Touch Naroth, Commissioner of Phnom Penh Police, warned before that any protest that can disrupt the Thai PM's visit and cause social disorders will be dealt with by the laws.
