Cambodia's Ministry of Agriculture said that a South Korean company, Kogid Cambodia, planned to invest $150 million to grow and process corn to make animal food for export to overseas markets, reports Radio Free Asia.
Mr. Chan Tong Iv, Secretary of State of Ministry of Agriculture, told the Phnom Penh Post that the company had a view to a long term investment in the Cambodian corn business and had planned to buy high grade corns from 4 provinces. He added that this year the company will buy 70,000-150,000 tons of corns from Battambang, Kampong Cham, Pailin and Kandal provinces. The company had also planned to build a corn-drying machine as well.
Mr. Tong Savuth, Executive of Kogid Cambodia, said in 2009-2012 the company will invest $36 million in the business. He added that the company will buy corns from brokers for $200-$210 per tons.
Currently, Cambodian farmers sell their corns to Vietnamese and Thai traders who are not reliable buyers.
