Seven Senior Military officers sued by NGO for illegal logging

An environmental NGO has lodged a law suit against seven military officers from Military Region 3 in Koh Kong court on charges of forest destruction of 1000 hectares in Kiri Sakor district, Koh Koh province.

The seven military officers sued by the NGO are: Touch Phy, Touch Sovannarith, Chheng Chhek, Sorn Koeun, Ho Thorn, Phan Rin and Kann Naing.

Mr. Chea Heang, chairman of the Organisation of Vigilantes for the Protection of Natural Resources told Radio Free Asia like this: "We sue them in relations to their involvements in the illegal destruction of the forests to illegally land-grab state lands."

Mr. Chea Heang said that the Koh Kong court has not summoned the seven defendants to the court yet.

Radio Free Asia was unable to contact the seven defendants for any comments at the time of this story going to air.

Mr. Yuth Phuthorng, Governor of Koh Kong province, said that those forests are protected sanctuary. He said that he will send a team to investigate the allegations. Mr. Phuthorng said: "I don't know anything yet. No one can lang-grab in the area. It is a conservation national park."

The Ministry of Environment has also said that it will send an environemtnal officer to Koh Kong to investigate the allegations of illgal forest destructions raised by the Organisation of Vigilantes for the Protection of Natural Resources.
