Ex-Police Commissioner of Mondulkiri province was one of the bomb plotters

Mr. Reach Samnang, former police commissioner of Mondulkiri province, was among the 4 arrested suspects for allegedly involved in a "National Leberation Front" movement which was responsible for planting the bombs in Phnom Penh on the 2nd of January, 2009.

The Reaksmei Kampuchea newspaper wrote that Mr. Reach Samnang was a former police commissioner of Modulkiri province but has been transferred to work at the Ministry of the Interior some time ago.

Reach Samnang is currently detained by Ministry of Interior's police after the arrests of Som Ek, Phy Saving and Hong Bun Nhean.

According to the Koh Santepheap newspaper, Som Ek, 46 years old, was the leader of the group. He was born in Kampong Cham province but currently has a permanent residence at Poipet town in Beanteay Meanchey province.

According to the newspaper, Som Ek confessed that he ordered Kim Sovath and 4 co-conspirators to plant bombs at the Khmer-Vietnam Friendship Monument in 2007 and the bombs in Phnom Penh on 2nd January, 2009.

The newspaper reported that Som Ek had formed a group called "National Liberation Front", with three tiger heads as it logo and called its armed wing as "National Khmer Amed Forces".

Som Ek was a member of the resistance fighters of the "Khmer People's National Liberation Front" (Son Sann's faction) based at Rithisen camp and he was re-integrated into the national army in 1993. Som Ek has been trained in the United States for one year and went to train in Thailand, Malaysia and Burma on how to make bombs. Som Ek has a dual Khmer-Thai citizenship and has a Thai wife.

According to Gen. Sok Pal, commissioner of Phnom Penh Police, Som Ek is a member of the Cambodian Freedom Fighters (CFF). He said that Som Ek's group has a support base overseas.
