Phnom Penh - Reckless driving led to one of the worst Cambodian tourist bus crashes in recent years when a vehicle carrying 22 local tourists collided with a car, killing 11, police said Wednesday. Choeung Prey district police chief in the eastern province of Kampong Cham, Hieng Vuthy, said the tourist vehicle was on the wrong side of the road when it rounded a bend and collided head-on with a car carrying three merchants on Tuesday.
"Eleven tourists died instantly and only three people in the accident escaped injury," he said. "The tourist bus driver was killed and the driver of the other vehicle broke his leg."
"If the tourist driver had been patient and tolerant it would not have happened," Vuthy added.
Cambodian drivers are notoriously reckless and often do not have a license. As the roads improve, their speeds increase, leading to a rapid increase in the number of serious accidents in recent years.
