No crocodile nests have been spotted in the Areng Valley over three years

Today, indigenous communities from Chumnoab commune, in the Areng Valley, and several environmental groups would like to inform the public and the media that no crocodile nests have been spotted in the Areng Valley for over three years. In March 2013, a team lead by the organization Fauna and Flora International and the Forestry Administration went to the Areng Valley to place traps in order to catch as many of these critically endangered crocodiles, falsely alleging that the Areng dam was going to be built soon. We believe that one of these traps killed the last female crocodile of breeding age. We are very worried that the population of Siamese crocodiles in the Areng Valley could go extinct in the near future unless something is done about it; Read the full press release in Khmer and English below.

អង្គការអន្តរជាតិមួយនេះ ជាមួយនឹងដៃគូរជាមន្រ្តីរបស់រដ្ឋបាលព្រៃឈើ បានចាប់ផ្ដើមដាក់អន្ទាក់នៅតាមដងស្ទឹងអារ៉ែង និងនៅតាមមាត់ត្រពាំងបបុសតូច ដែលសុទ្ធសឹងជាកន្លែងសំខាន់សម្រាប់ក្រពើភ្នំ ក្នុងគោលបំណងចាប់អោយកាន់តែច្រើនកាន់តែល្អ ដោយយកលេសថា ទំនប់វារីអគ្គិសនីឆាយអារ៉ែងនឹងសាងសង់ក្នុងពេលឆាប់ៗខាងមុខ។ ទង្វើខាងលើនេះបានធ្វើឡើងដោយការបោកប្រាស់ប្រជាពលរដ្ឋជនជាតិដើមភាគតិចដែលពួកគាត់ពុំសូវមានចំនេះដឹងនឹងពុំទទួលបានពត៌មាន ហើយស្របពេលដែលទំនប់វារីអគ្គិសនីពុំទាន់ត្រូវបានអនុម័តពីរាជរដ្ឋាភិបាលអោយសាងសង់នៅឡើយ។ នៅពេលសកម្មភាពនៃការជម្លៀសសត្វក្រពើដ៏ពិសិដ្ឋទាំងនេះ យ៉ាងហោចណាស់ក៏ក្រពើមួយក្បាលត្រូវបានគេចាប់យកចេញពីតំបន់អារ៉ែងផងដែរ។ ប្រជាជននៅតំបន់នោះបានព្យាយាមទៅតាមអង្គការអេហ្វអេហ្វអាយ និងរដ្ឋបាលព្រៃឈើដើម្បីតវ៉ាយកក្រពើមកវិញ ប៉ុន្ដែអង្គការនេះ បានលើកឡើងថាពួកគេបានទទួលលិខិតអនុញ្ញាតពីរដ្ឋាភិបាល ហើយពួកគេក៏បន្តយកក្រពើមួយនោះទៅប្រលែងនៅស្ទឹងមួយក្នុងខេត្តពោធិ៍សាត់។ បន្ទាប់មកអង្គការមួយនេះនិងរដ្ឋបាលព្រៃឈើបានបន្សល់នូវអន្ទាក់ដែលបានដាក់ហើយ និងសំភារៈជាច្រើននៅតាមដងស្ទឹងនិងត្រពាំងបបុសតូចនោះ ហើយអន្ទាក់ខ្លះត្រូវបានដកចេញដោយអ្នកភូមិដោយសារព្រួយបារម្ភខ្លាចក្រពើជាប់ តែអន្ទាក់ខ្លះពុំត្រូវដកចេញទេ ព្រោះអ្នកភូមិរកមិនឃើញ និងមិនត្រូវបានប្រទះឃើញដោយអ្នកភូមិ ប៉ុន្ដែមិនយូរប៉ុន្មានបន្ទាប់ពីអង្គការអេហ្វអេហ្វអាយនិងរដ្ឋបាលព្រៃឈើបានចាកចេញពីតំបន់អារ៉ែង អ្នកភូមិក៏បានប្រទះឃើញសាកសពក្រពើ មួយក្បាលត្រូវបានស្លាប់ ដែលហើមអណ្ដែតនៅក្នុងស្ទឹងអារ៉ែង។ នៅថ្ងៃទី ១៣ ខែមិនា ឆ្នាំ២០១៤ ប្រជាជនក្នុងតំបន់អារ៉ែង និងសកម្មជន បានរៀបចំពិធីបុណ្យចាប់ត្រីដែលបានធ្វើឡើងក្នុងត្រពាំងបបុសតូចនោះ តែជាអកុសលនៅពេលដែលយើងកំពុងនេសាទត្រី អ្នកភូមិគ្នាយើងក៏បានប្រទះឃើញគ្រោងឆ្អឹងរបស់សត្វក្រពើភ្នំដែលត្រូវបានស្លាប់ដោយសារការជាប់អន្ទាក់នៅមុខរូងរបស់វា ហើយអន្ទាក់នោះជាប្រភេទអន្ទាក់ដែលក្រុមអង្គការអេហ្វអេហ្វអាយ និងរដ្ឋបាលព្រៃឈើប្រើផងដែរ ទោះបីជាយ៉ាងណាយើងក៏មិនបានដឹងច្បាស់ពីភេទរបស់ក្រពើដែលស្លាប់នោះទេ ប៉ុន្ដែអ្នកភូមិជឿថានេះជាឆ្អឹងរបស់ក្រពើញីដែលតែងតែអាស្រ័យនៅក្នុងត្រពាំងមួយនេះ ដែលពួកគាត់បានឃើញជាញឹកញាប់ និងជាក្រពើញីនៅសល់ចុងក្រោយគេ ដែលស្ថិតក្នុងវ័យបង្កាត់ពូជផងដែរ។ ចាប់តាំងពីពេលអង្គការអេហ្វអេហ្វអាយនិងរដ្ឋបាលព្រៃឈើចូលទៅតំបន់អារ៉ែងយ៉ាងលួចលាក់មក យើងពុំបានឃើញសត្វក្រពើកាច់សំបុកសម្រាប់ពងនោះទេ ដែលជាសញ្ញាណបង្ហាញថាមេក្រពើមួយចុងក្រោយត្រូវបានស្លាប់បាត់ទៅហើយ ដូច្នេះយើងព្រួយបារម្ភថាក្រពើភ្នំអាចប្រឈមនឹងការផុតពូជផងតំបន់អារ៉ែង ។ ក្រពើភ្នំជាសត្វជិតផុតពូជត្រូវបានការពារដោយច្បាប់ជាតិ និងអន្តរជាតិ ក៏ជាសត្វដែលត្រូវជនជាតិដើមភាគតិចជងគោរពបូជាជាទីសក្ការៈហើយក៏ជាសក្ដានុពលសម្រាប់អេកូទេសចរណ៍ធម្មជាតិ សំខាន់ជាងនេះទៀតក្រពើភ្នំគឺសម្បត្តិជាតិដ៏មានតំលៃមិនអាចកាត់ថ្លៃបានផងដែរ។

PRESS RELEASE ON THE DEATH OF LAST BREEDING CROCODILE FROM THE ARENG VALLEY

We, members of the minority group Chong from the Areng Valley, together with environmental groups, would like to express our strong concerns that no nests of Siamese crocodiles have been found in the Areng Valley for the last 3 years, ever since the international organization Fauna and Flora International (FFI) and the Forestry Administration (FA) started a campaign to relocate the Siamese crocodiles from the area.

In March 2013, this international organization and their government partners from the forestry administration placed traps along the Areng River and the Omboh Touch billabong, important habitats for Siamese crocodiles, in order to catch as many crocodiles as they could, under the excuse that construction of the Chhay Areng dam was going to start imminently. This scam took place as the local indigenous communities lack sufficient knowledge and access to information, and despite the fact that the dam had not been officially approved by the government. During this campaign to relocate the sacred crocodiles, at least one male was caught and taken out of the valley. Local communities followed the FFI / FA team and demanded that the croc be returned, but this NGO alleged that they had authorization from the government and proceeded to release the crocodile into a river in Pursat province. (After that incident) the FFI / FA team left many traps and other equipment behind, both in the Areng river and the Omboh Touch billabong. Some of these (traps) were removed by local communities, concerned that crocodiles would get trapped in them, while some of the traps were not removed as the local communities did not find them. Soon after the FFI / FA team had left, the carcass of a crocodile was found dead floating in the river. Then, on the 13th of March, 2014, local communities and activists organized a fish-catching ceremony in the Omboh Touch billabong, in which we came across the skeleton of a crocodile which had been caught in a trap placed in front of its den, (a trap which) was of the same kind used by the FFI / FA team (in March 2013). Although the sex of the crocodile could not be determined, local villagers believe this could have been the female crocodile spotted many times before in the area, the last female crocodile in the Areng Valley of breeding age.

Since the FFI / FA team furtively entered the valley, we are yet to spot any crocodile nests, indicating that he last crocodile (of breeding age) has died. We are therefore concerned that the population of Siamese crocodiles in the Areng Valley will (eventually) go locally extinct. Siamese crocodiles are critically endangered species, protected by national and international law and revered as sacred by the indigenous Chong communities of the Areng Valley, and are important for the (development) of eco-tourism (project). Even more importantly, Siamese crocodiles are a priceless (asset) of our nation’s heritage.

For the above stated reasons we, as representatives of the local communities and as members of environmental groups, would like to ask for a meeting to take place as soon as possible with representatives of Fauna and Flora International in order to find out the truth regarding this very important issue and to try and look for a solution so that the population of Siamese crocodiles in Areng can be saved from extinction.
