For the lives of fisher families in Koh Sralau there is nothing more valuable than the gifts from the ocean that are now being taken from them. Our ancestors have bestowed on us the mangrove forests and the ocean, natural treasures that are the source of livelihood for fisher families and a home for fish and other aquatic wildlife. Protecting the mangrove forest is the same as protecting our home, in which we must care for, teach, and nurture the growth of our children. Crabs, shrimp, mollusks, and other aquatic wildlife all find a home in the mangrove forest. However at this time, the mangroves are threatened by sand mining, which is eroding the islands and riverbeds. At the same time the companies are pilfering this sand, they are also stealing our most valuable natural treasures, destroying our homes and our lives, as we stand at death’s door. If there are no more mangroves, the natural habitats of aquatic wildlife will be devastated, fisher families will lose their source of livelihood and must leave this area to look for other ways to subsist. They will become migrants forced to abandon their home, families, and relatives. If the mangroves are able to stand tall and strong and provide a home for all the sea creatures, all the fisher families will also flourish in their home and village. Protecting the future of the mangrove forests means protecting the home and the future of all families who depend on the ocean for their livelihood.
