Two girls drowned on Sunday at a waterfall in Pursat’s Veal Veng district, according to police.
Khoun Sreyneth, 9, and Bou Sokheang, 11, were in water less than 2 metres deep when they drowned, said Thma Da commune police chief Pech Sophoan.
The girls, both from Songkum Thmey village, had gone to the nearby waterfall with their families to play in the water. The 11-year-old knew how to swim, but the 9-year-old didn’t.
Shortly after their parents noticed them missing, villagers swimming nearby found the bodies.
“The villagers who were playing in the water in the area saw something red, so they tried to discover what it was and found out that it was a body,” Sophoan said.
A plastic boat was found near the location of the bodies. “We are not sure if they got in the boat and then it overturned or not,” Sophoan said.
Sreyneth was immediately taken by car to a hospital in Thailand and Sokheang an hour later.
However, Sophoan said, the girls had both died at the scene.
