The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation has announced two initiatives intended to make life easier for Phnom Penh motorists: road maintenance in the capital is to be conducted at night as much as possible and drivers will soon be able to renew their licences at Aeon Mall.

Ministry spokesman Nu Vatanak said yesterday the decision to repair the roads at night was taken to reduce daytime congestion.

“We do not have enough space in the day,” Vatanak said. “We’re going to do it at night so the national road won’t turn into a traffic jam.”

Meanwhile, Public Works and Transport Ministry director-general Chan Dara said preparations were being made to install a driving licence printer in Aeon Mall by next month.

The machine will allow people to renew their licences, or receive a new licence if they have passed a test.

“It’s convenient for people because Aeon attracts a lot of visitors,” Dara said.

The director-general said Aeon has agreed to give the necessary space over to his ministry free of charge.
