A spokesman for the national military police issued a statement on Sunday distancing four-star General Sao Sokha from a Facebook profile using his name and image.

“[The] Commander of the national military police Sao Sokha has no Facebook profile and all messages and information posted on the profile are not his,” military police spokesman Eng Hy said yesterday.

“We are concerned as the comments and information on the profile may affect the dignity of his leadership and be used to bad ends, such as a political manipulation.”

Hy would not specify which, if any, postings had provoked that concern. A “friend request” sent to the account was not responded to yesterday, but public postings on the profile stretch back to April 2011.

While the identity of the profile’s creator is currently unknown to military police, Hy said investigations are ongoing and cautioned that any further postings would result in arrest.

Government spokesman Phay Siphan said that while impersonating individuals on social media is considered forgery, no legal mechanisms currently exist to deal with the situation.
