One of two Kampot fishermen who disappeared in stormy seas on Sunday was found dead on Koh Kras beach yesterday afternoon, according to Touch Polak, deputy director of the Interior Ministry’s Water Border Police.

Polak said Nap Tmeum, 40, and Thmath Dolah, 30, from Troeuy Koh commune in Kampot, set out on Sunday morning to fish in the waters surrounding the island of Koh Kareang, despite severe weather warnings.

“Because of the recent weather, we informed them, and we always inform them, not to go fishing in bad weather,” said Polak.

However, “Because it was their daily and traditional business, they thought it was OK, so they did not care about the warning.”

Their boat was last sighted on Monday, said Polak, it was believed to have sunk at about midnight.

“We found the buoy connected to the boat” the following day, he said.

Tmeum’s body was found by villagers at 2pm, he said. Dolah’s has yet to be recovered.
