Singaporean-Cambodian bank opens in Phnom Penh

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- A bank jointly invested by Singaporean and Cambodian investors was launched here on Tuesday, with a focus on small and medium businesses loans.
Sia Rithy, deputy chairman of the Oxley Worldbridge Specialized Bank, said the investment decision came after the company has observed that Cambodia is full of political stability and its economy has rapidly developed in the last decade.
"The bank will focus its loans on individual customers, small and medium enterprises and companies," he said.
Ouk Maly, deputy governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, said the Oxley Worldbridge Specialized Bank clearly reflected the growth of confidence from investors and public in supporting the development of banking sector in Cambodia.
"It is the eleventh specialized bank operating in Cambodia," she said at a launching ceremony, adding that Cambodia's banking system continued to grow in both scope and scale.
"I believe that Oxley Worldbridge Specialized Bank will become a good development partner of Cambodia, a good operator with the National Bank of Cambodia in compliance with all regulations and also a good service provider to customers," she said.

According to the Cambodian banking law, a specialized bank is required a registered capital of 7.5 million U.S. dollars.
In addition to specialized banks, Cambodia has 35 commercial banks, 39 microfinance institutions, 38 rural credit operations and 6 financial leasing companies.
