Khmer Krom Federation seeks intervention for release of detained monks

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation hasn't yet received a letter from the Khmer Kampuchea Krom Federation which is seeking the ministry's intervention for the release of detained Khmer Krom monks, an official said Monday.

"No institution can interfere into court affairs as it is fulfilling its work, so let the court do its task," said Koy Kuong, spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The Khmer Kampuchea Krom Federation is seeking ministry intervention for the release of three Khmer Krom monks who were disrobed and have been jailed by Cambodian authorities on charges of protesting against public civil servants and joining so-called bad association.

In a letter Friday to Foreign Minister Hor Namhong, Thach Ngoc Thach said that on November 12 monk Soeun Hay was convicted by Phnom Penh Municipal Court and sent him to Prey Sar prison the same day after he was arrested and disrobbed a day before after he protested in front of the court to demand release of seven Boeung Kok land activists. Two other Khmer Krom monks were also arrested later.

Soeun Hay from Stung Meanchey pagoda was sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to pay two million Riel fine for act against public civil servants.

Other two monks, Khoem Vannak, 26 and Thach Sang, 19, also from Stung Meanchey pagoda were arrested on November 12 after they were traveling on a motorcycle taxi by carrying bamboo sticks and national and religious flags. The two were said to have planned to join March before they were arrested near Samaki Raingsey pagoda.
