Two Maids to Be Sent Home From Malaysia

BY  | the cambodia daily, JUNE 2, 2014
Two Cambodian women who were trafficked to work as maids in Malaysia are to be sent back to Cambodia tomorrow after authorities in Malaysia rescued them from abusive employers, said Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong on Sunday.
Though details about their trafficking and extent of the abuse is unknown, Mr. Kuong said the two women—Siem Srey Ngam from Kompong Cham province and Chhoy Run Phen from Pursat province—were rescued last week and sent to the Cambodian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
“They were rescued by Malaysian authorities and later were sent to the Cambodian officials in Malaysia,” he said.
The International Organization for Migration will help arrange for the two women to fly back home, he added. “They will be sent back at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday,” said Mr. Kuong.
Prime Minister Hun Sen banned the sending of maids to Malaysia in October 2011 after mounting reports of maids being abused and exploited in recruitment agency centers and at the hands of their employers.

The Malaysian and Cambodian governments are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding this month permitting their return.
