Government awards over US$250,000 to disabled athletes for winning medals

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) – The Royal Government of Cambodia on Wednesday awarded around one billion riel, to disabled athletes who won medals in recent 7th ASEAN Paragames held in Myanmar’s Naypyidaw, an official said.  

Cambodia sent 33 sport athletes, coaches and delegation to join the competition of racing, swimming and volleyball in ASEAN Paragames, which was held from 11-21 January, said Yi Veasna, secretary general of National Paralympic Committee of Cambodia. 

He said the Cambodian athletes won three gold medals, 11 silver and 5 bronze medals in competition of racing, one gold medal in race swimming and 12 bronze medals in competition of volleyball. 

The gold medal winners are awarded 40 million riel ($10,000), 30 million ($7,500) for silver medals, and 16 million ($4,000) for bronze medals, Veasna said. 

Cabinet Minister Sok An, who presided over the ceremony, said that the ceremony today showed the support of government for sport sector, especially disabled athletes in Cambodia.
