PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has estimated Cambodia's 2014 rice exports to increase slightly to 1.2 million tons over that in 2013 due to increased production.
The FAO reports that its imports estimate includes unofficial exports of milled as well as paddy rice sold through cross-border trade to Vietnam and Thailand.
Cambodia exported around 120,291 tons of rice during the first four months of 2014, up about 1.5% from around 118,504 tons exported during the same period in 2013, according to data from Secretariat One Window Service (SOWS-REF) for rice export.
Cambodia exported a total of 378,856 tons of rice in 2013, up about 84% from about 205,717 tons exported in 2012.
The FAO estimates 2014-15 aggregate paddy rice production from both main (June 2014 - February 2015) and secondary crops (November 2014 - April 2015) at 9.5 million tons, up about 1% from about 9.4 million tons produced in 2013-14 levels.
It estimates paddy rice production from the 2014 main season paddy crop at about 7.4 million tons (around 4.7 million tons, basis milled). It reports that below average rains in the main rain-producing areas have been delaying planting of the 2014 main crop. As of end April, about 62,117 hectares of rice land has been covered, down about 23% from about 80,671 hectares planted during the same period last year.
