And when it comes to ensuring the survival of Cambodia as an independent nation, there is a saying as old as the world: the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
By siding with China in her territorial dispute with Vietnam in the South China Sea, Cambodia could increase its chance to secure a fair resolution to its own territorial dispute with Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand, which is part of, or adjacent to, the South China Sea. The objective would be to also internationalize the maritime conflict between Cambodia and Vietnam because, as a matter of consistency, Vietnam, in her relations with China, cannot call for the respect of international legal principles that she herself doesn’t respect in her relations with Cambodia. The international community, whose support Vietnam is counting on, cannot use double standards and turn a blind eye to Vietnam’s infringing on Cambodia’s territorial waters and islands.

I am an Engineer working in France and I'm not a member of CNPR. I share totally the position of H.E. Sam Rainsy, president of CNPR, concerning the relationship between Cambodia and China. I can ensure, after discussing with friends, that most cambodian people particularly educated people agree with President Sam raingsy. It's not difficult to understand that position. In the international relations only the national interest counts. For the Unites States, a great superpower, a great democratic country, their interest in Asia - Pacific is to contain China. For this purpose they ally with vietnam which is a communist country and a former US's ennemy. The two countries have the same ennemy: China. A few months ago, when the vietnamese president visited US, he was welcomed with red carpet by american leaders. That demonstrated that for the US leaders, ideology, political regime are secondary. The most important for them is the national interest. For us, dear compatriots, the most important is the survival of our nation, our country, the defence of our territorial integrity. We are only 15 millions people, while vietnam has 93 millions people. Vietnam, to contain China, needs the backing of Unites States. We, cambodians, to defend our territorial integrity, need a backing of Great Power whose interest is to back us again the hegemony of vietnam. The only great power which doesn't want vietnam become bigger by swallowing Cambodia and Laos is China. For the United States, Cambodia is much less important than vietnam. Because what they want is that vietnam become bigger and stronger to contain China. Our compatriots of Kampuchea Krom cannot enjoy democracy, liberty because their country is run by vietnam. I think any cambodian leader which is clever and has an international stature agrees with H.E. Sam Raingsy. Dear compatriots, take the national interest before all.

Yes, you are right by saying that there are many cambodian guys and gals well educated than me. It's a good thing, for a country particularly ours to develop, to have many well educated citizens. Educated people place national interest above all. Of course a country needs every people (peasants, workers, soldiers, police, doctors, engineers, managers, businessmen etc...) to develop and protect its territorial integrity.
The main factor for the current situation of Cambodia is that we were divided. We were fighting each other. From now on, if we want the survival of our country, if we want to protect our country from vietnam's ambition, if we want to develop our country, we have to reconcile, unite, respect each other, accept the difference. That is the principle of democracy. We must not accuse someone of Yuon if he doesn't agree with us. We must not do like Pol Pot who accused someone who didn't agree with him of vietnamese agent. Doing like Pol Pot leads to the destruction of the country.
Look at Israel which is a small country of 7 millions people. Israeli people unite, don't fight each other, don't accuse each other of working for foreigner. But, in the struggle to protect their country, they need, besides the unity, and the reconciliation among israeli people, the political and military backing of the United States.
Cambodia, with its population of 15 millions people, is sandwiched between thailand with its 67 millions people and vietnam with its 93 millions people. The latter has an ambition, by every means, to swallow Cambodia in order to form, with vietnam and Laos, an indochinese federation run by vietnam with the aim of containing China. It's not difficult to comprehend that, in this context, we cannot count on The United States to prevent the vietnam's ambition, because vietnam is a Unites States's ally. Therefore, the only super power which has the interest to prevent the ambition of vietnam is China.
