Malaysia's DRB-HICOM Defence Technologies (Deftech) is in negotiation with the Royal Cambodian Army (RCA) over a deal to upgrade the service's Soviet-era T-54/T-55 main battle tanks (MBTs), company officials confirmed to IHS Jane's on 16 April.
Speaking at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, officials explained that the scope of the MBT upgrade has yet to be finalised and ultimately will be determined by funding sourced from both Cambodia and a potential loan from a Malaysian bank. The plan covers both interior and exterior modernisation of the MBTs.
The officials said the programme, should it commence, would be carried out in partnership with Polish company Bumar.
