Minister of Defense Gen.Tea Banh inspect the guard of honor.
PHNM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) – Ministry of Defence on Friday said that it is strongly committed to protecting election results and Prime Minister Hun Sen’s government.
“Royal Cambodian Armed Forces are committed to protecting election results and government under Hun Sen’s rule for this fifth mandate, and will fulfill task to maintain social order and national security,” the Ministry of Defence said in a rare statement which was issued just hours after a violent crackdown on protesters who blocked a road in front of the Canadia Industry Park, at the suburb of Phnom Penh.
The ministry also appealed to residents, monks and other related sides to avoid any activities and speeches that provoke violence in the society.
The army issued such a strong statement as political tension flared up in the Kingdom due to mounting pressure from the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party led by Cambodian-French politician Sam Rainsy to demand new elections and Hun Sen’s resignation.
The military police today cracked down on protesters who blocked the road in front of the Canadia Industry Park, leaving at least four protesters killed, 27 injured and 11 arrested.
This was the most serious crackdown on protests since the last July election.
