Opposition leader Sam Rainsy speaks to reporters at Phnom Penh International Airport
PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Opposition leader Sam Rainsy arrived in Cambodia on Tuesday after a two-week long campaign abroad to seek support for his Cambodia National Rescue Party's (CNRP) bid to bring foreign intervention to Cambodia's election dispute.
He returned home just a day before his party's planned three-day protest at Freedom Park.
Rainsy left Cambodia on October 7th to campaign in the United States and Europe to seek foreign help, requesting that those countries not recognize the current government of Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Speaking to reporters at Phnom Penh International Airport, he said he will lead the protest and march along the streets as planned.
When asked if the 55 elected lawmakers of the CNRP will attend a National Assembly session, Rainsy said, "the CNRP will not attend any session in the National Assembly if there are no talks over equal post divisions in parliament."
The CNRP will hold a three-day mass demonstration starting from October 23th to the 25th, to protest the results of the election and also demanding the establishment of an independent committee to probe into the so-called election irregularities.
The Ministry of Interior on Monday had granted permission to the opposition party to hold their protest, but only allowed 10,000 people to gather, not allowing any overnight stay at the protest grounds.
