PHNOM PENH, 28th August 2013 (The Cambodia Herald) -- The opposition
Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) will hold a "non-violent" mass
demonstration on September 7, 2013 against the results of last month's
general election, according to a CNRP statement issued Wednesday.
The
statement said that next month's demonstration will protest the first
official election results announced by the National Election Committee
(NEC) earlier in the month.
In the preliminary official election
results announce by the NEC, the Cambodian People's Party of Prime
Minister Hun Sen, had won the majority vote, receiving 68 seats out of
the 123-seats in parliament.
Cambodia's Ministry of Interior spokesman, Khieu Sopheak, hasn’t commented on the opposition’s protest announcement.
He
asked reporters to ask Phnom Penh City Hall because the Ministry of
Interior would have to check and verify the request made to city hall if
there was a submission for a mass demonstration.
Phnom Penh
City Hall spokesman, Long Dimache, said that city hall hasn’t yet
received the official request order from the opposition party over the
protest.
He added that depending on the current volatile
political situation, authorities would not allow the demonstration along
the streets.
