Cambodian democracy alive and well

Re: "In Cambodia, democracy is stuck in infancy", Editorial, July 10.

This article is full of lies and manipulations of facts. The intended message is to completely insult and demonise Cambodia, its government and the prime minister of the country.

In response to the editorial, I wish to clarify the following points.

First, Cambodia today is not the same Cambodia of yesterday. To state that "Hun Sen has done nothing over the past two decades to support the fundamental principles of democracy" is a calumny. Cambodia has thousands of civil-society organisations and a free press. Please open your eyes and look around at the countries in this region and around the globe. You can also do an introspection of your own society as well, before you judge others.

Second, Cambodia does not have only one opposition leader or one opposition political party, as the article implied. In the upcoming elections on July 28, Cambodia will have eight parties, and many of them are opposition parties.

Third, the Cambodia People's Party (CPP) and Samdech Techo Prime Minister Hun Sen did not change the "game", as the article said in attempting to manufacture facts. He did not topple Prince Norodom Ranariddh from power in July 1997. It was Prince Ranarridh who brought Khmer Rouge soldiers to Phnom Penh in order to grab power. It was Samdech Techo Hun Sen who was the victim of the July 1997 event. Is there a political motivation to rewrite the history of Cambodia?

Fourth, Cambodia has political prisoners? Sam Rainsy has never been imprisoned in a Cambodian jail. Yes, he was convicted on several occasions for the crimes he committed. Despite conviction, it was Samdech Techo Hun Sen who requested His Majesty the King to pardon Sam Rainsy, in the spirit of national reconciliation and democracy, as has been done again in order to allow Sam Rainsy to participate in the upcoming elections. Therefore, to say "he has been imprisoned several times" is a complete lie and a serious act of manipulation.

Fifth, it is ludicrous to state that "Hun Sen and his CPP seem fearful of their opponent's popularity". Neither Samdech Techo Hun Sen nor the CPP is fearful of the opposition in the upcoming elections. All of the parties have been actively campaigning in an open and conducive environment. And with the return and participation of Sam Rainsy, it proves once again that Samdech Techo Hun Sen and the CPP always welcome opposition leaders to participate in the elections.

Sixth, Cambodia today is an open society, with a functioning democracy. Foreign media, such as Radio Free Asia, Voice of America and Radio France International, just to name a few, have been broadcasting freely in the country, including during the present election campaign.

Furthermore, Cambodia is one of the very few countries in the world that has allowed the UN Centre for Human Rights and UN Secretary-General's Special Rapporteur on Human Rights to operate. So to accuse the government of having a "poor human-rights record" and "the suppression of political opponents" is either complete defamation or an attempt to paint a bad picture of Cambodia.

To Koy Kuong, your face looks like a baby dog barking for the bone. Your replies is full of lies even a child can see through your game.

1. You need to open your eyes, Cambodia has been under Hun Sen for 30 years, yet the development we have seen under Hun Sen ruling remains true as we can see the increase in human right abuse, force eviction, illegal forestation, human trafficking, illegal immigrant from Vietnam. Can Hun Sen see it with it with his ONE eye?

2. The article stated that Sam Rancy is the main opposition leader, Sam Rancy a threat to your ONE eye Khmer Rouge leader. The article also stated that although many political parties have registered and campaigned, but it is expected that CPP will remain in power. Nowhere in the article does it say, that Cambodia only have one opposition leader or one opposition party.

3. Your ONE eyed Khmer Rouge leader, changed the game when he lost the 1997 national election. But killed hundreds of opposition members and forced Rannariddh to flee the country into France. The real victims of the 1997 events were those killed by Hun Sen and Rannaridh because Hun Sen wouldnt give up his power even when he lost the 1997 election as well as the 1993 election. Are you suggesting that Hun Sen was a victim of Cambodia because the people didn't elect for Hun Sen in 1993 and 1997?

4. Of course Cambodia doesnt have political prisoners. Mom Sonando wasnt a political prisoner, he was just a leader of an anti-government, only sentenced to prison for 20 years after he was found by the Hun Sen court. Beoung Kok 12 werent political prisoners. Mom Sonando should have been given a death sentence for such treacherous act for trying to create a civil war.

5. It is wrong to say that your ONE eyed leader is fearful of the opponents. After-all, Hun Sen killed thousands of Khmer during Pol Pot before he flee into Vietnam. Your ONE-eyed leader is also very brave when he killed hundreds of Parliment members when he lost the elections. Not to mention how many time your ONE eyed leader tried to assassinate Sam Rancy. Why should your ONE-eyed leader be afraid of anyone in Cambodia?

6. Cambodia is an open society, yet, CPP seems only interested in the donors and iads in their own pocket rather than the country. How many millions of dollars have been invested in the ECCC? How many millions of dollars have been invested in the infrastructure and development of the country? Yet why are there hundreds of public, public road, public park named after your ONE-eyed leader? If Cambodia is a functioning democracy, why are the money going into the pockets of your leader?

7. Not only is Cambodia is one of the most corrupted country in the world, but also the only country in the world that after 33 years relies heavily of donors and aids and fail to stand on its own two feet.

The posted comment as on 11:12 am & 3:33 pm both of you were right, brother. So I am totally agreed with you.

Barking purposely on these articles, Koy Koung is taken part outrageous behavior because he spoke as the cpp's government has so powerful elite for country for over some 30 years ago. And that was being led by his leadership Hun S alone as it is including several of multiple opposition’s party involving till today as the country has conducted with 100% of the true democracy – freedom of press, human rights, equal opportunity and the three branches of government was working an independently.

In vice-versa, As all Kon Khmers in public at large, we do not agree of which what you have explained to us as this and that like that, however, we knew exactly with all of your reasons there it is just to implement or only a favoritism to your own boss alone [ Cpp's Yiek Minh + Yiek-Cong = Hanoi controlling of indochina ]

To me all alone, I would rather believe in the global witness and the UN's rapporteur, H.E. Sorya Subedi and, the European Union might as well as the Paris Peace Agreement According in 1991 than you were just barking for the CPP of being destroyed the Cambodian Nation.

Maybe you have to it because of your opportunist or your family's was relating to youn's Yiek-Minh.

Guess what, if your gov were too good as they were fully served for public interest as served to the Khmer national, could you just point or tell us some about how and why a flux of youn's immigration moved into Khmer soil with non-stop, what about the K-5, Kos Tral, Khmer border line, the 99.99 year land concession, who handle the Khmer Temple Angkor watt and Bok kor, why the gov allow youn to set-up or have such as a twenty four association represent on Khmer soul. How many of the main suspect has been arrested so far by whether the government or the justice.
e.g.; the grenade had thrown on the march in 1997 that was led by Mr. Sam Rainsy has never been caught but the scapegoat.
And so, Mr. Chea Vichea, Chhut vutthy and a dozen more activists plus the editorial Khmer journal have been killed and the like.

I think you/Koy Koung/ has a problem with your own far-sight so that you could see very well of everything related matters as all of these.
