PHNOM PENH, 8th May 2013 (The Cambodia Herald) -- The National
Rescue Party (NRP) is scheduled to send their candidate list to the
National Election Committee (NEC) this weekend.
The candidate list to be registered, so the NRP can compete in the general election, may also include the name of Sam Rainsy.
However, NEC officials said, Sam Rainsy could not be included in the upcoming election because he had been convicted of crimes and if the NRP submitted their list with his name, the NEC will require the party to re-examine their list again.
"We will ask the National Rescue Party to include another name to replace Sam Rainsy’s, and they will have five days to do so," said Tep Nitha, Secretary General of the NEC.
Sam Rainsy, President of newly-created National Rescue Party, has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for uprooting border posts along the Cambodian-Vietnamese border, forgery and disinformation.
According to Cambodia’s election laws, convicted criminals do not have the rights to cast ballots and can not be a candidate in an election.
Currently, five political parties have submitted their candidate lists to participate in the general election on July 28, but only three parties: the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, the Khmer National Party and the League for Democracy Party have been officially recognized.
