PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Im Suosdey,
Chairman of the National Election Committee (NEC), met Tuesday with
Surya Subedi, UN special rapporteur for Human Rights in Cambodia.
"We told him (Surya Subedi) what we have done in accordance with law and what we have done to respond to his concerns," Im Suosdey told reporters after the meeting at NEC headquarters.
“This was a good opportunity for us to explain real situations and laws in our country, and experiences we've learned," Suosdey said.
He said, the UN special rapporteur told us his concerns with recruitment of NEC officials and other issues raised by non-government organizations (NGO) and the opposition party.
Suosdey said Surya Subedi didn’t bring up his concerns regarding the election process or reforms of the NEC and issues related to Sam Rainsy.
Surya Subedi arrived in Cambodia for a week visit this past Sunday evening.
He will also speak and meet with government officials, civil society organizations and other related institutions to boost human rights.
The meeting with NEC officials was made a day after the National Rescue Party held a mass protest this past Monday to present petitions to the European Union and the UN, demanding the reforms of the NEC and the review of the election lists.
