PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- The National Rescue Party, an alliance between the opposition's Sam Rainsy and Human Rights parties, announced they will protest against  National Election Committee (NEC).

The protest is scheduled for April 24th, and they will demand for the acceptance of the recommendations made by non-government organizations and the United Nations, to change some of  people in the NEC.

Yim Sovann, spokesman for National Rescue Party, said Wednesday, his party will protest if the NEC doesn’t review the election lists and also change some of its leaders, especially in lower level.

He said, at least 4,000 participants will be involved in the first phase of the protest on April 24th.

They will gather in Democratic Park and take 30 minutes to read  statements and march to the National Election Committee's headquarters located in the Ministry of Interior.

"The opposition’s protests will be held to ask the NEC to accept the United Nation's recommendations because they can not accept an indefinite election that full of cheats," Sovan said.

However, the National Election Committee said, they can not accept what the opposition is demanding, but also says that the opposition parties have the right to protest.

Tep Nitha, Secretary General of National Election Committee, said, the NEC did everything in accordance with the law and the election lists have already been decided.

"We can not do that, if we accept those recommendations, it violates existing election laws," Nitha said.

Im Suosdey, the National Election Committee chairman, said, the NEC isn't surprised about the opposition’s plans to protest.
