PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- The number of people arrested over
land disputes jumped 144 percent from a year earlier to 232 in 2012, the
Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (Adhoc) said
Thursday.
"In late 2012, 38 people were detained in prisons and another 50 faced charges of incitement, defamation and disinformation," Adhoc president Thun Saray said.
Speaking at a news conference, he said Adhoc last year received 70 complaints about land disputes affecting 101,408 hectares of land and 10,689 households. Sixty-two cases remain unsolved, he said. Provinces most affected were Battambang, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Koh Kong, Mondolkiri, Rattanakiri and Siem Reap.
Thun Saray also noted threats against people who attended forums organized by non-government organizations. "A lot of violence and threats occur with community representatives as well as human rights and land activists," he said.
As of December, he said, the government had given companies at least 2.6 million hectares in economic land concessions.
