US releases photo from closed photo opportunity

President Barack Obama participates in a Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) group at the ASEAN Summit at Peace Palace in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Nov.20, 2012.

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) - The United States Department of State has released a photograph from a photo opportunity in Phnom Penh last week to which ASEAN photographers were denied access.

US President Barack Obama appears in the photo alongside the prime ministers of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam as well as the president of Myanmar.

The photo opportunity, which took place at the Peace Palace on Tuesday last week during a 15-minute coffee break at the East Asia Summit, was designed to promote America's Lower Mekong Initiative, officials said.

Launched by the United States in 2009, the initiative involves Mekong cooperation in the areas of education, health, environment and water, connectivity, agriculture and food security as well as energy security.

"This photo op was a demonstration of the commitment of all members to develop strong collaboration to address the most important transnational challenges of the region," the State Department said.

It was not immediately clear why ASEAN photographers were denied access to the photo opportunity.
