Cambodia is on track to welcome a record number of tourists in 2012.
According to the latest data from the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism, the country attracted 2.86 million international visitors in the first 10 months of 2012 – 24% more than the same period last year. The ministry said it expects this figure to hit 3.3m visitors by year-end, a new record for the country. Last year Cambodia received 2.88m international visitors – itself a new record.
The Angkor Wat temple complex is still the biggest draw for the country. 1.64m international tourists visited the UNESCO-listed site in the first 10 months of the year – up 28% compared to the same period in 2011.
The result marks a remarkable turnaround for the country, which only welcomed a trickle of tourists during the 1990s, due to internal conflicts.
